Volunteer Needed for Raw Dairy Pickup
St. Pete Locally Grown Market Needs Volunteer to Pick Up Raw Dairy
Raw Dairy Lovers:
I didn’t think this could wait for Monday. Our recent plan for getting raw dairy to you from The Dancing Goat has been cancelled due to a well deserved promotion and additional responsibilities for our would-be volunteer. Congratulations Miss Carol!
I am back asking for a volunteer to pick up dairy in Oldsmar every other Thursday afternoon. Pam says picking up anytime after Noon until 4 or 5pm will work well. Volunteer will pick up crates (2 or 3 to transport the egg cartons) and 2 or 3 large styrofoam coolers/ice at our home on Thursday on the way to Pam’s. There is a back up person who is ready to help on an emergency basis with 3 or 4 days notice whenever the primary volunteer has something come up.
We will not be able to continue carrying The Dancing Goat’s products as of Oct. 1st without a volunteer to do the pick up. Only THREE Markets remain to train someone to fill this spot. Please respond to make arrangements for training with Nathan next week (on 8/20) if at all possible.
Thank you!
Only the Best,
Tina, YOUR Market Manager

GROW YOUR OWN: Moringa
There is still time to get moringa trees in the ground as they thrive in the heat. They can be pretty invasive so do some research before you transplant them from a pot into your yard… Here is Nathan’s take on “Easy to Grow Plant for Hot Climates, Moringa Tree” filmed during one of his backyard gardening classes. Beware the moringa causes heartburn in some people both raw or cooked, so test it out first. BEFORE you decide to take the plunge, read this article “Moringa, More Than You Can Handle” from someone who found the Moringa hard to manage.
Summertime Volunteer & Training Opportunities
MARKET PRIORITIES Thanks to all who have responded to the call for picking up dairy in Oldsmar every other Thursday. We’ve got a plan in progress now and I’m following up with folks who volunteered to be backup in case the primary person is unable to make it. If you’re interested, please contact me.
NEXT PRIORITY – We need more delivery people trained and ready for the fall wave that will descend upon us sometime in October or November. We need to use the summer to train folks for this. We have three shifts to fill for Friday deliveries. Commitment is a 2.5-hour shift between 1130AM & 630PM. Delivery volunteers are asked to train to become a part of our Friday team and attend a 20-minute phone conference orientation at their convenience. Teams of two deliver via large air-conditioned cargo van throughout St. Petersburg, near Largo, and into Gulfport. Volunteers must be detail oriented, working with checkoff sheets and distributing invoices. Our delivery duos are forming bonds and meeting smiling and grateful customers excited about their vegetables.
Details of volunteer needs for the following folks are listed at the links below.

CLEARANCE ITEMS
We are just bulging with new categories for our Market lately. Next up is “clearance” for discontinued goods. Either there isn’t enough demand or there isn’t enough supply. SAVE BIG as many of these items are pretty much going “at cost”. My new mantra is “live & learn”!
SPECIAL THANKS TO SUMMER GROWERS
Despite recent ongoing rains, Growers for SPLG continue to push forward the best they can to produce for our customers. We offer sincere thanks to all of them for supporting our Market and our Customers! Special mention of Nathan Levy for dropping his workshop prices to just $15 per class. Take advantage of this special summer pricing! Detailed flyer is linked on our Weblog page.

SUGGESTED CHANGES FOR YOUR MENU
- Never had grass fed lamb before? Now is your chance to try it at clearance pricing. We will not be repurchasing due to low demand. Lots of other clearance items, including salmon, available to enjoy before they are gone for good.
- I’m quite curious about several new herbs coming this week from The Faithful Farms. Check out Anise Hyssop which has a licorice flavor but comes from the mint family. Another herb, Salad Burnet has CUCUMBER-flavored leaves.
- Variety of Peppers this week to stirfry, eat raw, or “get hot” over! Just search for peppers to find hot ones and oh-so-sweet ones Here’s a recipe for the Shishito’s!
SPLG’S FRUIT BASKET
Early Gold Apples, Cantaloupe melons, Medjool dates, seedless Red grapes, luscious nectarines, and green papayas grown in St. Pete!
SATISFACTION GUARANTEED
Our Market has high standards for what it sells. Despite that—as seasons transition—the challenges of evolving weather and pesky insects can take its toll on the crops. Market Growers are being very selective about what they are willing to present to you. No, it won’t always be picture perfect (which is part of its charm) and sometimes an insect is going to evade capture! But we won’t send you anything that we wouldn’t eat ourselves. If for any reason we have goofed and you are dissatisfied, please report it to me right away so we can rectify the situation. That’s how we get better and we all benefit from that. Your satisfaction is key to our success as a resource for St. Petersburgs’ lovers of chemical-free, organically & locally grown vegetables.

SPLG BENEFIT: Direct Order Service
Here’s how it all works: Whenever you order an item that is labeled as a “DIRECT ORDER”, the Grower will deliver that item to you at a convenient pre-arranged time, separate from your normal SPLG Friday delivery. These plants are too large for our regular Friday deliveries. There is NO additional cost to you for this service. An added convenience is that you will pay for the plant(s) with your regular order from us. The only difference is that you will receive an email contact from the Grower to schedule delivery. We are grateful to Growers who have such a passion for selling more developed plants—including exotic fruit trees—to assist customers in building sustainable & beautiful edible food forests.
Summertime Volunteer Opportunities
MARKET PRIORITIES: FIRST, particularly needed is a volunteer to pickup dairy in Oldsmar every other Thursday afternoon. ORGANIC LEMONS
Ours are gorgeous and grown in USA! I have not seen a certified organic lemon in local health food stores any larger than a golf ball and they cost up to .99 each! Abundance is scarce so the price is way up. Ours cost a bit more than local pricing this week but they are a nice size, high quality AND you are getting them practically at cost. Thought you might like the best “Giveaway” we could find!
SUGGESTED CHANGES FOR YOUR MENU
Baby Globe Artichokes These are so beautiful! Wondering how to cook these? Here is a brief youtube showing how easy it is to prepare them. 2 or 3 per person should do it.
Tatsoi is one of the least understood MILD greens available on our Market. Pioneer Settlement and Brenon’s Homegrown have both carried these in the past and NOW Grower Faithful Farms has brought them back on board this summer! “…this unassuming Brassica vegetable is supercharged with calcium, carotenoids [for eye health], vitamin C and glucosinolates, which makes tatsoi one of the healthiest salad greens out there.” SOURCE: http://www.healwithfood.org/ Eat raw, steam, or stirfry and drizzle a little sesame oil on the finished product.
Roasting Radishes Here is just ONE reason out of five to roast radishes this summer, besides the fact it takes only 10 minutes. “Roasting mellows out their bite: If eating spicy radishes isn’t your favorite thing, you have to understand that roasting mellows them into sweet little bites.” SOURCE: Great recipe! and all the right reasons to change up your menu. Don’t miss Customer Kim’s posting on our Market Community Blog about the soup she made from radish greens.
FINDING DEALS ON OUR MARKET
I’ve done just some of the work for you below but remember to do a search in future Markets (on the Market page) by entering “sale” in the “product name” box at top of the product list to find all sale items. Or search for “direct service” to find larger plants for your expanding food forest. Filter products by “economy” to find larger size packages for big savings & lots of 1-pound bags of basil ready for pesto making! Filter by “giveaways” to find items that are priced just above cost to encourage you to try them out. Need help? Call YOUR Market Manager to learn how.
SALE PRICING
ALL coffee, Goat Chevre, Goat Kefir, Medjool dates, ALL lamb cuts (there will be no more lamb in the future), Molly’s Suds products including dog wash, several pork cuts, one of Jennifer’s incredible Remedies, and both warm & cold smoked salmons.
“GIVEAWAY PRICING”
GIVEAWAYS are your chance to try items you might not otherwise try. This week our “giveaways” include organic butter, dark sweet cherries, ALL size salmon portions, high quality USA lemons, and luscious tatsoi greens. You won’t know what you’re missing until you’ve tried them. Giveaway pricing is here for the summer to help us all save money and avoid waste.
SPLG’S FRUIT BASKET
Fancy lemons, dark sweet cherries, Medjool dates, seedless green grapes (recipe for Sunken Grape Cake which I have made numerous times), luscious peaches, and both green and ripe papayas grown in St. Pete!

SPLG BENEFIT: Market Manager = Food Forager
Yes, it is my job as Market Manager to find new supplies for locally grown veggies and locally raised meats for SPLG Customers. This summer is different than any before because Nathan’s Natural Veggies (my husband) has always been a major supplier year round. Nathan continues to build his permaculature food forest with the intention of planting more fruit trees. Our hope is that we will make extra money in our golden years selling wonderful fruits through this Market or one like it. With Nathan pretty much retired now, I continue to look for replacement produce like okra, yardlong beans, cow peas, and more spinach variety, all of which don’t mind growing in Florida’s summer heat. I’ve met several local farmers who may fill the bill but probably not until next summer. Currently, I am also seeking a new local farmer to raise pork for us as My Mother’s Garden has leased their farmland to a CSA and will no longer raise hogs to sell. Our Market requires a USDA Certified Facility for processing the animals and that can rule out a whole lot of farmers. And so it goes and so I love the challenge! With My Mother’s Garden pulling out of our Market you should know that whatever pork is left is all there is and, unless we find a new farmer, there won’t be anymore. So buy it up while you can! On another subject but related to caring about local food supplies, I found a bit of myself in this article on Local Harvest and it got me to wondering how many others have been part of the local food movement long enough to see themselves as well.

SPLG BENEFIT: Recipe Relief
One of the many things I enjoy as Market Manager is sharing recipes that inspire you to try the produce we sell. In addition to the recipes I promote, we have blog authors on our
Market Community Food Blog, like customer Kim Munshower, who posts pretty regularly. I just love when customers share their experience so we all can learn new ways to surprise our palates. Here are several more recipes that Nathan and I enjoy as well using a variety of produce on the Market this week: eggplant, swiss chard, and a variety of basils for hummus and pestos. Trust me that this Szechuan Eggplant Stir-Fry is better than what we have been coveting as our favorite from a local restaurant. In addition, this recipe for Curried Red Lentil and Swiss Chard Stew with Garbanzo Beans is good year round and especially in the summer now that chard is still available. I’ve turned alot of people onto this make-ahead stew, saving time and excess heat in the kitchen. Not familiar with pestos? If you have never made pesto before, they are great on pasta, fish, beef, etc. You can even add pesto to any sauces you make. You can substitute whatever nuts you have on hand just as long as you finely chop them. Cheese is not necessary. I add real butter too! Make a creamy consistency to your liking and savor this wonderful condiment called Pesto. Like hummus? You haven’t lived til you make one with peanut butter! OMG here it is… Thai Basil Hummus. Super major flavor and very satisfying. Bon Appetit!

WHY YOU SHOULD drink cucumber water. Everyone says I must try this but I am SO hooked on lemon water right now! What has been your experience with it?
FOOD BLOGGERS UNITE!
We are grateful to everyone who blogs on our Community Food Blog, especially customer Kim Munshower who is diligent about posting her experiences. If you aren’t following her, here’s your change to catch up with how busy she has been. She even mentions her use for pestos in this interesting post for Grilled Cheese with Roasted Carrots. FOURTH OF JULY FOOD FARE
Having a Holiday gathering for the Fourth of July? Although we can’t plan your menu, we can surely provide many of the ingredients for great summer fare and offer suggestions with recipes that have worked for us. After delivery from SPLG on Friday you’ve got a whole week to prepare for your July 4th gathering using pastured eggs, ham, and apricots from our Market this week. DON’T MISS more recipes in “SPLG BENEFIT: Recipe Relief” on the sidebar at left. Some of the fruit you purchase this coming week will be perfectly ripe for the upcoming Holiday weekend. We suggest some good old standards with a twist here and there. For starters, try this French Style potato salad recipe that is one of my favorites from Cook’s Illustrated. Here’s your chance to
make devilled eggs from pastured eggs. I’ve heard that it helps to add a pinch of baking soda to the boiling water. Ever tried making pulled pork in a crockpot? Just get a ham and let the crockpot do its thing. For an adventurous ice cream dessert try Brown Butter Apricots Brioche and Ice Cream. Need a time saver? Lately I’ve been making pies (buying the refrigerated crusts you unroll into a pie pan) and using up all leftover fruit I can find. No waste and what a treat! SPECIAL THANKS to Customer Merilee Hampton for sharing this link to desserts for the Red, White, & Blue!
SUMMER EGGS
According to Pam of The Dancing Goat, summer egg layers pose a challenge as they want to go broody and hide their eggs. This can make eggs too mature for sale. SO, before you crack them open, put the eggs in a bowl of room temp water. The floaters should be discarded and your Market Manager notified so the eggs can be replaced.

WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST CUSTOMERS
Once you have submitted your order, if in doubt about what you owe, you can always confirm what you have been charged for by checking your account history and viewing your most current invoice. Instructions on how to do that are on our Q&A page under the question entitled Since you don’t provide an invoice with delivery, how do I know what I owe? Also, since your vegetables are picked fresh within 24 hours of delivery, they should be lasting for WEEKS in your refrigerator. When you accept delivery, please take a few minutes to inspect your order to protect your vegetables from unnecessary spoilage. Lastly, it is imperative that you understand our policy on Unclaimed Orders found on our Q&A page. When you make a purchase you are agreeing to abide by this policy.

SPLG BENEFIT: Foodies Unite!
Our monthly potluck socials hold promise for more than “just” fostering friendships. Equally valuable, lots of health conscious foodies attend and share wonderful recipes you can easily make at home. Taste test serendipitous “trough” dishes; try different types of hummus like this smoky paprika hummus I like to add roasted red bell peppers, skinned and unseeded, and use less olive oil to keep end product consistency thick enough. There is likely to be a nice salad dressing available for the variety of salads that appear. Your can’t go wrong with this Paleo French Dressing. It is my new “go to!” dressing. So bring your own specialty to share with your fellow Market Members, most of whom are looking for new ways to dress up their current menus. If you are ready to learn more about what to do with the veggies and produce we sell on our Market, consider taking full advantage of your membership benefits at St. Pete Locally Grown. Attend the next potluck social on June 26th. Find your email invite from www.whoozin.com and do RSVP if you can.

SUMMERTIME RESOURCES
It is that time of year when change in seasons causes veggie resources to fluctuate due to the summer heat. We are in hot pursuit of new resources but until we can locate them or they even come into an existence, we will sustain our small local business using different strategies for providing great summer fare for our customers. As in the past years, we are doing our best to find the summer produce that is grown locally. If it exists then we are going to find it. If you know about sources then please get in touch and I will pursue it. We want to serve you year round. We are SO fortunate to have local growers like Brenon’s Homegrown, Ida’s Garden, and Faithful Farms to support us all summer long! Your patience and support are much needed, especially for these upcoming summer months. This is even more reason for you all to learn to grow your own food, even in the summer. Let Nathan teach you. Next Saturday 8AM come find out and get your seeds in the ground.
“GIVEAWAYS!”
So many of this weeks offerings can be grilled or wrapped in foil and baked on the grill, and I am selling some items at “very close to cost” to get them out the door! I have created a new category I call “Giveaways”. These items are priced way below local retailers so I’m practically giving them away. I’ve chosen to use this strategy rather than have spoiled produce that won’t keep until next Market. Most of the time I have a partner with a small business who shares the minimum order I am required to make from a local organic distributor. However, whenever I have to “go it alone” I will be posting “giveaways” for our customers. The benefits of your membership is getting these kinds of deals under these tricky circumstances. I invite you to recruit friends to get these great deals as well! It is a win-win for everyone with good healthy fresh produce at excellent pricing!

SPLG BENEFIT: Blooming Friendships
One of the best kept secrets of a membership in St. Pete Locally Grown is the camaraderie that grows between attendees of our potluck socials from one month to the next. Equally valuable, volunteering for St. Pete Locally Grown has benefits beyond the importance of serving the St. Petersburg Community. There is lots of seredipitous sharing of resources and knowledge. Entrepreneurs offer an exchange of small business practices. Health advocates connect and collaborate. College interns bring youthful ideas to our processes. Retirees & corporate professionals share expertise to improve our business. Activists bring resourceful approaches to serving our local community. All walks of life comingle for surprising results! All these interactions form bonds at some level that are important to the hearts and minds of those who participate. Just ask anyone involved “what are they getting out of this experience?” From a nice change of pace to personal satisfaction of doing a great job, each person contributes to a phenomenal blessing for all involved. If you are ready to experience new people and grow personally while serving your community, consider taking full advantage of your membership benefits at St. Pete Locally Grown.
IMPORTANT Volunteer Opportunities IMPORTANT
They are ALL important, but right now I am recruiting a volunteer for Thursday afternoon to drive OUR vehicle and pick up raw dairy goods and pastured eggs from The Dancing Goat in Oldsmar every other week around 330pm. On the way back, the driver will drop off the car at Enterprise Truck Rental in Pinellas Park around 445pm—transferring goods from car to delivery van that we will use on Friday. This adventure takes from 2.5 to 3 hours depending on traffic. The importance of filling this volunteer spot is that Nathan is fully retiring by October and will no longer be available to make this trip. Our ability to continue selling raw dairy and eggs from The Dancing Goat could be impacted if we don’t find a replacement by then. Perhaps someone who loves Pam’s raw dairy will decide that they just cannot live without it on our Market?
