SPLG BENEFIT: Market Manager = Food Forager

Yes, it is my job as Market Manager to find new supplies for locally grown veggies and locally raised meats for SPLG Customers. This summer is different than any before because Nathan’s Natural Veggies (my husband) has always been a major supplier year round. Nathan continues to build his permaculature food forest with the intention of planting more fruit trees. Our hope is that we will make extra money in our golden years selling wonderful fruits through this Market or one like it. With Nathan pretty much retired now, I continue to look for replacement produce like okra, yardlong beans, cow peas, and more spinach variety, all of which don’t mind growing in Florida’s summer heat. I’ve met several local farmers who may fill the bill but probably not until next summer. Currently, I am also seeking a new local farmer to raise pork for us as My Mother’s Garden has leased their farmland to a CSA and will no longer raise hogs to sell. Our Market requires a USDA Certified Facility for processing the animals and that can rule out a whole lot of farmers. And so it goes and so I love the challenge! With My Mother’s Garden pulling out of our Market you should know that whatever pork is left is all there is and, unless we find a new farmer, there won’t be anymore. So buy it up while you can! On another subject but related to caring about local food supplies, I found a bit of myself in this article on Local Harvest and it got me to wondering how many others have been part of the local food movement long enough to see themselves as well.

    Summertime Volunteer Opportunities

ALL MARKET OPPORTUNITIES are listed on our Q&A page. Please take a look and give me a call 727-515-9469. You are needed this summer! Particularly needed are volunteers, both on every other Thursday mid-afternoon, to pickup dairy in Oldsmar and administrative help working with Market Manager to make adjustments to invoices. Details are at the link. YOU ARE NEEDED. Please respond to make arrangements for this week if possible.

    GROWER NEWS
Valued Grower Faithful Farms is absent from our Market this week. Luckily we’ve got Brenon’s Homegrown & Nathan’s Natural Veggies providing beautiful greens mixes that substitute so nicely for standard lettuce fare. Just search for “Salad” and you’ll find them on our Market complete with salad dressing recommendations! Now’s your chance to try something different.

MEDJOOL DATE RECIPES to share. Also this one for stuffing with feta cheese that I often hear about. We have Medjool dates on our Market in TWO sizes of packaging.

    SMOOTHIE OPERATOR
Thought it might be that time of year for you too, when summer smoothies become a great chilled substitute for ice cream. I admit I am addicted to ice cream and right now I’m not winning. So my pledge is to retry this great concoction created back in December during a wonderful winter-hat-making party with SPLG Volunteers. Sincere thanks to Customer Phyllis for the inspiration to make this Smoothie Operator that was posted to our Community Market Blog. If YOU want to blog for us, just send me an email and I’ll add you as an Author.

    SATISFACTION GUARANTEED
Our Market has high standards for what it sells. Despite that—as seasons transition—the challenges of evolving weather and pesky insects can take its toll on the crops. Market Growers are being very selective about what they are willing to present to you. No, it won’t always be picture perfect (which is part of its charm) and sometimes an insect is going to evade capture! But we won’t send you anything that we wouldn’t eat ourselves. If for any reason we have goofed and you are dissatisfied, please report it to me right away so we can rectify the situation. That’s how we get better and we all benefit from that. Your satisfaction is key to our success as a resource for St. Petersburgs’ lovers of chemical-free, organically & locally grown vegetables.

    WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST CUSTOMERS
Once you have submitted your order, if in doubt about what you owe, you can always confirm what you have been charged for by checking your account history and viewing your most current invoice. Instructions on how to do that are on our Q&A page under the question entitled Since you don’t provide an invoice with delivery, how do I know what I owe? Also, since your vegetables are picked fresh within 24 hours of delivery, they should be lasting for WEEKS in your refrigerator. When you accept delivery, please take a few minutes to inspect your order to protect your vegetables from unnecessary spoilage. Lastly, it is imperative that you understand our policy on Unclaimed Orders found on our Q&A page. When you make a purchase you are agreeing to abide by this policy.
