    Featured Volunteer, Chris Larsen

Chris Larsen has been a Market member since December 2010. She is also one of the first-ever volunteers to contribute talent to our Market. For over three years she has spent time almost every Friday morning in Nathan’s garden either nurturing or harvesting produce for delivery to our customers. With a critical eye for quality and focused caring hands, Chris has become quite accomplished at harvesting only the best of it and doing it in record time. As a result of her experience in Nathan’s garden she and her husband Bruce now have a thriving home garden from which they get all their vegetables and literally no longer need to buy through us. THAT is our Mission! Accomplished! We value Chris “Angelface” Larsen, not only as a generous volunteer but now as a family friend. She is a key member of our Market Community as well, sharing her nutritional expertise which is her passion. THANK YOU, Chris!

SO YOU’VE BEEN WATCHING US FOR AWHILE NOW
wondering what’s all the hubbub about. Come find out for yourself… Volunteers are needed to help with Friday deliveries of locally grown, chemical-free vegetables to St. Petersburg customers. You get to ride for two hours as part of a tag team delivering throughout St. Petersburg and into Gulfport. You will meet many of our customers who are so grateful for the time you invest to bring them their vegetables. YOU CAN GIVE THEM A BUSINESS CARD! We have 3 shifts to fill which run from 11am to 1pm, 1 to 3pm, and 3 to 5pm. All times are approximate as we do sometimes run another 15-20 minutes over. We do require that you attend an orientation that takes place WednesdayS at NOON (for 45 minutes) for those who will be delivering for the first time on Fridays. Call Market Manager Tina Levy to inquire on qualifications or to sign up for one of three shifts. 727-515-9469

HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU ORDERED FROM US?
Do you want to save $40 on a new membership with St. Pete Locally Grown? You have just TWO Fridays left to accept delivery at the old rate of $50 per year assuming you have ordered from us at least ONCE so far. Membership fees are being increased for the coming year by $40 effective March 1, 2014. This brings the total annual investment per household to $90—or $7.50 per month—which is still a very affordable proposition when compared to other local options. For current members this new rate does not go into effect until your next annual renewal. For those considering it, membership in St. Pete Locally Grown has intrinsic value beyond what is listed here but you won’t discover that unless you become a member or speak to those who are. The tangible list of membership benefits in this Market Community gives you and your household access to high quality, organically grown produce from local urban farmers with whom we have built trusting working relationships, one that does not require purchase or minimum orders, lets you mingle with local SME’s who are part of our business’ network, and attend monthly potluck socials where growers, volunteers and customers converge to build a small town farming community right here in St. Petersburg. We could charge much more for membership but we choose to make this a very INCLUSIVE local movement. As usual, we will continue to offer installment payments for those who need them.

    WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST CUSTOMERS!
Once you have submitted your order, if in doubt about what you owe, you can always confirm what you have been charged for by checking your account history and viewing your most current invoice. Instructions on how to do that are on our Q&A page under the question entitled Since you don’t provide an invoice with delivery, how do I know what I owe? . Also, since your vegetables are picked fresh within 24 hours of delivery, they should be lasting for WEEKS in your refrigerator. When you accept delivery, please take a few minutes to inspect your order to protect your vegetables from unnecessary spoilage. Lastly, it is imperative that you understand our policy on Unclaimed Orders found on our Q&A page. When you make a purchase you are agreeing to abide by this policy.

IF YOU GROWN YOUR OWN FOOD & YOU WANT TO SHARE YOUR PHOTOS
Please email me and I’ll send you an invite that will give you access to posting photos of your abundance on our Pinterest page. If not, then Follow us as we encourage local urban farmers to post their food garden photos to share with the entire St. Petersburg Community! Let’s document the power of growing food LOCALLY! Just follow this link to our Pinterest project. We are also documenting “The art of distributing food to the St. Petersburg Community”. Hope you will follow our progress! with that project as well.

    How This All Started

Back in 2010, Nathan Levy set out to plant a garden that would succeed in Florida’s hot climate, year round! Having moved here from California where he was tremendously successful with growing his own food, he failed THREE times before he discovered the secret of growing year round in this climate. For those who like to sneak a peek at history, here is a look back at Nathan’s wonderful effort starting back in 2010 before the St. Pete Locally Grown was conceptually born in St. Petersburg.

    Featured Volunteer, Nathan Levy

Nathan Levy is not only a Grower for St. Pete Locally Grown, he is also the “behind the scenes guy” who sets up our distribution area so we can prepare for deliveries. His background as a production manager serves us well as he creates efficient processes to streamline the time it takes to get things done. Known as “Nate the Great”, Nathan literally can fix anything and that is a huge Blessing to our operation! The icing on the cake, so to speak, is that Nathan is an experienced and well-spoken teacher who provides great training to newbies and veterans alike on subjects of urban farming. His workshops are posted on our Calendar of Events and we encourage you to attend. Nathan supports our Market’s Mission for people to grow their own food so they won’t have to buy it from us. WEEKLY DELIVERIES & FEES
Delivery pricing really revolves around how efficient we can make our delivery process. With our business starting to boom and growing delivery demands, our business model is evolving to where we have had to cut back on home deliveries in some areas. Those folks are being assigned to alternate pickup spots, mostly in their own neighborhood or an adjacent one. This will help us keep delivery fees low. Until we have enough resources available, this is the best path for us to follow at this time. We request your continuing support by your willingness to relinquish a home delivery at least for now. Please be patient as we aspire to keeping our service convenient for our customers AND cost effective for sustaining our small business and our fluctuating volunteer pool. Planned increases in this area will be minimal, perhaps from $1 to $2 more per delivery. Nothing firmly decided yet. Again, we are intent on covering our costs with minimal impact to our customers.

    Featured Volunteer, Gina Castellano

    Gina Castellano

Gina Castellano works for CASA – Community Action Stops Abuse, which has propelled her into a life of activism, including Pinellas Greens and the Florida Green Party. She calls herself a biophiliac which literally means ‘love of life or living systems’. For a few years of her childhood, Gina lived on a commune in Virginia where they grew their own food. She developed a connection with nature’s ability to flourish. Most recently the Occupy Movement brought her an awareness of urban gardening, inspiring her to take action locally. Says Gina: I started volunteering at community gardens and taking gardening classes. I met Nathan and Tina and started helping out on Friday morning with food distribution. A couple months later, I became a part-time garden manager for Old Southeast Community Garden. I am a member of SUAC – Sustainable Urban Agriculture Coalition, always looking for ways to be involved in our local food movement, and getting inspiration from the results I am witnessing. I feel it is imperative that citizens learn how to grow food as a matter of survival one day and even better to share this food within our communities. There is a stronger interdependence within communities as more local interaction develops, creating a renewed local economy thus keeping dollars circulating locally. This is the revolution; this is the change I wish to see.

GERALDSON COMMUNITY FARM & ST. PETERSBURG URBAN FARMS
Veggies from Geraldson Community Farm (GCF) in Bradenton are like gold to our Market, and for alot of reasons. Not only is their produce top quality and beautiful, the volume and variety they provide our customers is extremely well rounded. They are also helping to fill a production gap within our local community. With that said, as St. Pete’s urban farmers continue to evolve, producing higher levels and greater variety of locally grown veggies, we look forward to St. Pete Growers playing an even larger role in supplying our local Community with vegetables grown right here in St. Petersburg. Until then, sincere thanks go to all customers who purchase from our Market and create more demand from St. Pete’s urban farmers. Your encouragement is highly noted and very appreciated. THANK YOU.

    WEEKLY DELIVERIES
Last week, I enlisted local entrepreneurs at the Spiritual Niche Network (SNN) monthly luncheons. They are supporting St. Pete Locally Grown by volunteering with deliveries on Fridays. In return, I am allowing them to pass out business cards and flyers with the orders. It’s a great trade off and a win-win for our customers should someone or something catch your eye. Thanks in advance for considering support of these local small businesses.

    MARKET FEES
Delivery and membership fees are being reevaluated for the coming year. As your Market Manager, one of my duties is to grow the Market and to retain our dedicated customers. To that end, I can assure you that, whatever we decide to do, it will be done for the good of sustaining our Market and providing affordable, high quality goods from our Market to your door. Longterm, I envision Market fees fluctuating up—and down—as needed so the Market can continue to provide this much needed service and valuable products to the St. Petersburg Community. Stay tuned.

    DELIVERY OPTIONS
Business is starting to mushroom! This is what we have been working towards. As a result, we are striving to serve an expanded delivery schedule by condensing some of our deliveries. For some neighborhoods, this may mean eliminating household deliveries and relegating all orders to one particular household for pickup. We know there will have to be exceptions! Please be patient as we aspire to keeping our service convenient for our customers AND cost effective for sustaining our small business and our fluctuating volunteer pool.

    Featured Volunteer, Brenon Duff

I like to volunteer because I learn new things and get to know other people better. I’ve worked in my own garden for many years and I do it alone because it’s a time for me to contemplate and be creative outdoors in nature, and I like to watch plants grow. But when I help in other people’s gardens, it’s teamwork, it’s community, it’s camaraderie. And when it’s for a good cause that’s benefiting many people, like SPLG or the Faith House garden, that’s a great motivation. I also learn new things and sometimes teach a bit as well. So helping in Nathan’s garden is just plain fun and I encourage anyone who hasn’t volunteered there to try it. You won’t regret it.

    WELCOME TO PERMACULTURE GOODIES
This week we are thrilled to have Justin Marlin coming on board with his St. Petersburg urban farm called Permaculture Goodies. Justin is a local Permaculture Designer and is offering permacultural produce that our Market has yet to find anywhere else. Woohoo for more variety and “Welcome” to Justin! Can you say “Chayote”? pronounced “chay-oh-tay”…

BEDROCK LIVING GOT A GREAT WELCOME!
Thanks for the warm welcome you extended last week to Leanna Cappucci of Bedrock Living! Her products sold out during her first week on our Market and she’s back this week with more quantity and an expanding variety of her line of “safe”, “clean” and “real” body care items.

    GLORY ROAD GARDENS
Did you know that our Market sells a microgreen mix that contains an eye-popping mix of any of the following varieties: pea shoots, red oak leaf, red mustard, arugula, ruby streaks, komatsuna, gem marigold, red choi, purpel mizuna, red Russian, ruby red chard, garnet amaranth, basil, and Thai basil? GRG’s microgreens are grown to a stage of development in between a sprout and a baby green. They contain the dense nutritional value of a sprout topped off with an extra kiss of life sustaining chlorophyll. Chlorophyll has been called “nature’s greatest healer”. It is the first product of light, therefore contains more healing properties than any other element. Also important: All of GRG’s mixes will keep between 2 and 3 weeks when properly refrigerated but you will finish them off way before then! POSTNOTE FROM MARKET MGR Just heard from the Grower that “the weather got all the fragile stuff… no blends this week..should be back to normal next week.” Until then, enjoy the succulence of fresh pea shoots and sunflower shoots. Hoping that we have whet your appetite for this luscious mix on future orders.

As a result, we are striving to serve an expanded delivery schedule by relocating some of our delivery drop spots. The lower the amount of stops we have to make on Friday, the more deliveries we can squeeze into our all-day schedule. Please be patient as we aspire to keeping our service convenient for our customers AND cost effective for sustaining our small business and our fluctuating volunteer pool.

    Seeking Delivery Solution

I am seeking an alternative to renting a cargo van for our weekly deliveries. It’s very expensive and is going to impact our fees in the long run. I am wondering if our Market Community can put our heads (and pocketbooks) together to figure out a “palatable” solution that will help St. Pete Locally Grown makes its deliveries with a more cost effective solution. One idea is to borrow or rent a van from any of you who may have a large van available on Fridays. Another is to make a group purchase of a van and take turns using it, with SPLG getting it on Fridays. Your thoughts please?

BEDROCK LIVING JOINS ST. PETE LOCALLY GROWN
We are very excited to welcome Bedrock Living this week. Leanna Cappucci provides some first-time, much needed products for our Market with her line of household products that she describes as her “happy accidents”. Leanna contends that these are “preservative free, chemical free, additive free, artificial colorant & fragrance free natural hygiene products that don’t just work… they heal.”

MESSAGE FROM PAM LUNN OF THE DANCING GOAT
We have recently switched raw cow milk suppliers to a smaller family farm that is more able to accommodate our needs and grow with our demands. JTB Jersey Farms, owned by Bill & Tina Wilson of Duette, Florida, produces a superior raw cow milk product from 8 mainly grass fed Jersey heifers. They will be growing as our sales grow and producing more products as time allows. The Dancing Goat will be their representative in the Tampa / St. Pete / Clearwater area and we are so proud to have made this connection. The cows are fed supplemental grain at milking time and touched daily by the family to insure the health and well being of the cows. There is NO dairy in Florida (with the exception of Full Circle in Live Oak and last I heard he was $18 a gallon raw cow milk and $22 a gallon raw goat milk) that has NON GMO feed to my knowledge – and I do stay on top of it.

    GATEAUOCHOCOLAT & OAKDALE COMMUNITY GARDEN
Emmanual Roux has decided to withdraw from our Market as his dedication to expanding local projects has depleted his availability for our Market. We appreciate his investment of time and product since our inception in 2011 and the support his participation provided to our fledging small business. Thank you, Emmanuel.

    Featured Volunteer, Rita Sewell

    Rita Sewell

My decision to volunteer in Nathan’s garden started soon after my initial visit Summer 2011. I wanted to learn to grow my own food and knew nothing. My experience with the extension service was uninspired. Now this place was like nothing I had ever seen. My idea of farms were long rows of vegetables in the hot sun with folks bent over toiling in the heat. Nathan’s is the" Garden of Good Eating". with patches of shade, raised beds, birds chirping, flowers blooming, no toxic spray or evil overseer and such peacefulness! My Friday mornings were free so I started coming. Now I find that the time I spend in the garden is renewing to my spirit. I am double blessed by playing with a a team of wonderful volunteers. Chris, Brenon, Christy and Phyllis are mellow and their low key style fits right in with the garden vibe.

When I am not hanging around in the garden I work as a nurse advocate in my own business, part time in a physicians office, work part time as a health screener, garden in my own yard, volunteer at my Lutheran Church, play guitar at a monthly meet-up and try to do God’s will for my life every day. As a recovering junk food junkie I know eating fresh local food is the key to my total well being.

    EGGS AND RAIN
Just so you know, when the weather is rainy, chickens don’t know enough to wipe their feet before they get in the laying nests, i.e. dirty eggs! If the eggs were to be washed before you get them, the bloom on the egg would be removed by washing and they won’t be as fresh. Please put dirty eggs in a bowl and wash in tepid water just before you use them.

    TAMPA VEGGIE CO-OPS
We are moving our co-op drop from Yogani Studio in South Tampa to the Westshore area on Gandy Blvd. If you have friends in the vicinity of that intersection please let them know that we are trying out a Friday drop there for the next few weeks to see if there is enough demand.

DOES A FRIEND PICK UP YOUR ORDER FOR YOU?
Customers who have backups picking up for them at co-op locations are required to provide Market Manager the contact names and numbers so we can call the backup if we are running late. This will help us do a better job if we get ahead of schedule too! It will also keep your friends (& us) from getting stressed out…

    VETERAN GROWER RETURNS THIS WEEK!
It’s wonderful to welcome back Toad Stool Pond this week. Check out one of Jan’s best-selling products, now available to our Market Customers: “Aquaponic Water – The Highly Nutrient filled water from our Aquaponic Gardening System. Common Uses include: Sprouting; Transplanting; Relieving Plant Shock; Rejuvenating or Energizing your plants. How It All Works: Fish produce ammonia in their waste. This waste water is continuously running through four aerated biological filters. In which nitrifying bacteria convert this fish waste into a high nitrate content. Nitrate is a natural fertilizer used by plants to make protein. Plants just love it! NEVER FOR HUMAN OR PET CONSUMPTION. A COUPLE SUCCESS STORIES 1.) In winter (2010) Jenee Tropicals of St. Petersburg, had lost just about half of their business, due to the hard freeze we were having. There were about 100 plants that were struggling, so we decided to make an experiment out of 60 of the worst plants. I had heard of how well this Aquaponic Water worked and I wanted to see for myself if it was true. They diligently applied the Aquaponic Water to the 60 plants, and to our surprise those were the only ones that survived. 2.) I planted 21 fruit trees in my front yard, I use no other fertilizer than my Aquaponic Water. I used a gallon a week per tree to establish and then once a month. I have impressed Certified Permaculturalist design artist, Robert Segundo, of Fire of Hope, with how well they are growing and how well they look.”
