Grower News
- The Dancing Goat is back with sale items to celebrate Easter!
- A reminder that Grower Bedrock Living has changed to a Market schedule to 1st week of every month sales until summer.
- Due to heavy rains, my trip to potential new Grower in Terra Ceia was delayed. Tomorrow is the day!
- One of our Market’s prized urban farmers from past seasons, Richard Nicholson of Richard’s Garden is looking for more earth on which to extend his production. If you have a plot of yard or some unoccupied urban land in St. Petersburg which you are willing to share for Richard to produce organically grown, chemical-free vegetables, please contact Richard at 727-488-4185 or email rickfromhome@yahoo.com.
- Jennifer Gilman of The Herbal Cabinet is on a well-deserved break for two weeks but will be back with healthy solutions for all your herbal remedy needs.
- St. Pete Fruit Stand is active this week with fresh stevia from Kathleen Maxwell. The quality herbs coming from Kathleen’s urban garden is amazing. Hopefully we’ll see some Genovese basil soon. She is quite generous and, like many of our Growers, very fussy about freshness & presentation.

Fruit Sales of Pears & Apples
Prices for pears and apples, as you must have noticed by now, are through the roof in the stores. I am having issues with ordering them at so high a price knowing that many of our customers cannot afford to buy them. I do my price checks weekly and stumbled upon some organic apples at Winn-Dixie recently. They are 5.99 for a 3lb. bag! How they can afford that I’ll never know but that’s at least $3 less than the local health food stores. Our Market cannot compete with that so right now I recommend you check at Winn-Dixie’s for them. Warning: they are very limited in quantity but who knows maybe we can build enough demand that they’ll get more? A WORD ABOUT PEARS: This time of year all the pears are imported from other countries. I’ve been told that US organic growers (the large ones in particular) purchase land outside the country so they can grow year round and sell year round. This makes sense but it means that I am presented only with imported choices. Your thoughts on imported pears for our Market? Would you even consider purchasing them?
WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST CUSTOMERS!

New Co-ops Forming in Greater Pinellas Point (GPP)
We’ve been fortunate that several folks have volunteered to host veggie drops at their homes in GPP which just happen to sit on opposing sides of GPP which is one of the largest neighborhoods in St. Petersburg. These two co-ops have been dubbed GPP West (startup date tbd) & GPP East (starts up on 4/18th) and they are filling a gaping hole in our chemical-free veggie distribution. We are SO grateful to these volunteers who want to support the building of a small town farming community right here in St. Pete! Please tell your friends and neighbors in GPP that St. Pete Locally Grown is now delivering to their neighborhood for just $4 per order.
Disston Heights Co-op Put On Hold

Our Small Town Farming Community
St. Pete Locally Grown’s Market is attracting new Growers. We are getting less dependent on “less local” resources for the fresh vegetables we sell on our Market. Special Thanks are in order to all our Growers who have dedicated the past few years to making this happen and to our new Growers who give us a chance to prove that the customer demand exists. We wish to thank Growers large and small for the intention they are demonstrating and the hard work they are investing in literally propagating the outcome we all want: Fresh, Locally Grown, Chemical-Free Vegetables for the St. Petersburg Community. Gracious Gratitude to our loyal customers who have been with us since the beginning of 2011 as well as the customers who are signing up, on average, 20 per month. Endless Appreciation for our fab Volunteers who ask for nothing in return for their investment of valuable time for planting, harvesting, packaging, and delivering St. Pete Locally Grown’s precious cargo to YOUR HOME & OFFICE. Our small town farming community continues to unfold!

Friday Deliveries
The picture above was taken early Friday morning on my way home from Enterprise Commercial Trucks where I had just picked up our delivery vehicle. I wish everyone could feel the excitement I get jumping behind the wheel of this powerful long-bed cargo van every Friday morning in anticipation of filling it up with your vegetable orders. Our Friday volunteer delivery team is an amazing one, well-trained and dedicated to exceptional customer service. They too get excited at the anticipation of customers greeting them both with big smiles of delight and recent evidence of progress in their home backyard gardens. THIS small local business—called St. Pete Locally Grown—is helping to build the small town farming community taking shape in St. Petersburg. What a joy & what a mission! Have you told your friends and neighbors what they might be missing, not only in the way of produce, but the sense of belonging to a local grassroots effort that can ONLY benefit their health, the local economy, and the city of St. Petersburg?
YOUR Market Manager
I’m not kidding when I sign emails this way. My job is to help you enjoy the best our Market has to offer. That includes encouraging you to attend our potluck socials, linking you up with Market resources you aren’t yet aware of, suggesting ways to cook veggies that you’ve never experienced, recommending ways you can use your talent to serve others via our Volunteer program, and generating enthusiasm for growing your own food if you are inclined to do so! Please let me know how we can better our service to you, our Valued Customers. Please tell us “How are we doing?”
Sharing An Account & Paying For Membership Fees
Many people ask if it’s ok to share an account and split the membership fee. Since our livelihood depends on each annual membership fee to operate YEAR ROUND for our customers, the simple answer has to be NO. Did you know that the majority of our Growers receive—and well deserve—80% of what customers pay for Market goods? The Market gets the remainder to help with overhead and supplies. This is just ONE reason why CUSTOMER ACCOUNT SHARING IS PROHIBITED. Membership in St. Pete Locally Grown is “priceless” and works out to just $7.50 per month per household. Customers can defer full payment by paying with a credit card. For those who consider the fee too high, we hope you will compare it with local options and let us know if you find something more affordable that offers both: 1) YEAR ROUND locally grown produce and 2) the bonus of a built-in YEAR ROUND social community. We will continue to offer low delivery fees and product pricing that either competes with—or is lower than—local health food retailers. You will not get fresher produce than ours unless you grow your own & we’ll even teach you how to do that. P-R-I-C-E-L-E-S-S. Do contact your Market Manager Tina Levy if you have any questions about your account or membership fees.

VALUABLE LOCAL RESOURCE
There are so many valuable resources promoting sustainability within St. Petersburg, you will have to check in with the Sustainable Urban Agriculture Coalition (SUAC) in St. Petersburg to get a list! In fact, one of the most important local grassroots movements going on in St. Petersburg is spearheaded by the local Gaia’s Guardian Group that meets weekly. Please visit their website at http://www.gaiasguardians.info/ to find out where and when they meet and link to wonderful articles that will teach you how to grow your own food. At monthly meetings, you will mingle with wonderful interesting folks who will encourage you to step out and make a difference, not only in your own life and for your own health, but for the health of our local Community. There are many people to feed in St. Petersburg and it only makes sense that Growers selling through St. Pete Locally Grown cannot feed the entire city. Luckily, local trends reflects clearly that our St. Petersburg is quite active in feeding itself, through school gardens, community gardens, corporate gardens, urban farms, and home gardens like yours. We are behind that movement 100 percent! If you love St. Pete, please look them up and attend a Gaia’s Guardian Meeting. Get involved now!
WE RECYCLE
We need STURDY egg cartons, plastic, cardboard and sturdy (not thin) styrofoam. We are willing to get them back to our egg Growers. Big need for these! Best to drop them on the front stoop of our home if you know where we live. But if you want to leave them for us with your weekly coolers that’s ok too.

Can You Help?
We need neighborhood co-ops formed to which we can deliver a group of customers’ orders on a weekly basis. We have recently attempted to launch THREE veggie pickup spots for your orders from St. Pete Locally Grown in Historic Uptown, Euclid Heights, and Euclid-St. Pauls Neighborhoods. Gracious folks from these neighborhoods have offered space for our customers to leave coolers for Friday deliveries. We need your help to create sufficient demand for these co-ops to be formed. Please contact your friends in these neighborhoods and let them know. If you want to try us out, this is the week to do it and show your interest. The sustainability of our business depends on this cooperative effort. Please help us get this working.

MEAT PRODUCTS
We are in the process of getting more meat products for our Market which may become available to you THIS week. If so, I will send out a special broadcast and those who have been waiting can place a second order to be delivered to you this Friday. Beef, pork, and lamb are the expected items this week, salmon in two weeks, and chicken-not sure as our Grower has moved recently and has taken a short break.
YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW
Eating local means getting used to what grows locally and learning how to integrate new foods into our lifestyle. Here a few items (some of many on our Market this week) that are so abundant, it’s sad that they might end up in the compost pile due to lack of interest. Live a little! Try these while they are still in season. You might fall in love with them and how nice to discover something new and wonderful for your mealtime repertoire. With the weather warming up, these are not going to last much longer.
Tatsoi is the new spinach, haven’t you heard?
Broccoli leaves are edible!
Collard greens can be stuffed!
Kohlrabi is “what happens when broccoli and cabbage get married”. How about a Greek-Style Kohlrabi Gratin With Dill and Feta?
Asian greens: Not sure what to do with those on our Market? Know Your Asian Greens and get suggestions.
Need a great ginger dressing for all greens, meats, old shoes, etc? You’ll never stop making this one!

WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST CUSTOMERS!
Once you have submitted your order, if in doubt about what you owe, you can always confirm what you have been charged for by checking your account history and viewing your most current invoice. Instructions on how to do that are on our Q&A page under the question entitled Since you don’t provide an invoice with delivery, how do I know what I owe? Also, since your vegetables are picked fresh within 24 hours of delivery, they should be lasting for WEEKS in your refrigerator. When you accept delivery, please take a few minutes to inspect your order to protect your vegetables from unnecessary spoilage. Lastly, it is imperative that you understand our policy on Unclaimed Orders found on our Q&A page. When you make a purchase you are agreeing to abide by this policy.
Grower News
ADVICE FROM GLORY ROAD GARDENS
Monitor the condition of your microgreens by changing out the paper towel every day or so. Leave a little air in the bag. Don’t store them in a super cold area of your refrigerator. Too much cold degrades microgreens quickly.
IF YOU GROW YOUR OWN FOOD & YOU WANT TO SHARE YOUR PHOTOS
Please email me and I’ll send you an invite that will give you access to posting photos of your abundance on our Pinterest page. Just follow this link to our Pinterest project. We are also documenting “The art of distributing food to the St. Petersburg Community”. Hope you will follow our progress! with that project as well.

Featured Volunteer, Lynda Stolzman
Lynda Stolzman has been a volunteer for St. Pete Locally Grown for three years. With a background in organizational development, she has contributed her valuable expertise to our growing Market business as it reaches new challenges at higher levels. IS THERE A DELIVERY PERSON HIDING WITHIN YOU?
Volunteers are needed THIS WEEK to help with Friday deliveries of locally grown, chemical-free vegetables to St. Petersburg customers. For newbies, we have a 30-minute phone conference orientation each Wednesday at 1130AM. Call Market Manager Tina Levy AT 727-515-9469 to inquire on qualifications and to get in on the phone conference. As part of our delivery day, you get to ride for two hours as part of a tag team delivering throughout St. Petersburg and into Gulfport. Our delivery folks are forming bonds with one another and getting to meet smiling and grateful customers excited about their vegetables. YOU CAN GIVE EVEN GIVE THEM YOUR BUSINESS CARD. We have 3 shifts to fill which run from 11am to 1pm, 1 to 3pm, and 3 to 5pm. All times are approximate. PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD TO THOSE LOOKING TO MAKE NEW CONNECTIONS WITHIN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY.
PLEASE PROMOTE US IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOODS
This coming Friday, Feb. 28th we launch THREE veggie pickup spots for your orders from St. Pete Locally Grown in Historic Uptown, Euclid Heights, and Euclid-St. Pauls Neighborhoods. Gracious folks from these neighborhoods have offered space for our customers to leave coolers for Friday deliveries. We are testing the waters this coming week to determine if there enough demand for us to travel to these neighborhoods to deliver. If you want to try us out, this is the week to do it and show your interest. Try us twice before deciding on a membership for YEAR ROUND LOCALLY GROWN veggies delivered to your neighborhood now and ALL SUMMER LONG. Based on the number of orders from these neighborhoods we will determine if there is enough demand to deliver there. If not enough demand yet then customers will continue to be assigned to other neighborhood spots nearby. Promote community building within your neighborhood AND support the locally grown food movement. It’s time for this to happen. The sustainability of our business depends on this cooperative effort. Please help us get this working.

LAST WEEK TO PAY MEMBERSHIP AT OLD RATE OF $50 PER YEAR
If you have been holding off on placing your third order, wait no more! Next week it will cost you $90 to join. As our active members will tell you, membership in St. Pete Locally Grown has intrinsic value beyond what is listed here but you won’t discover that unless you become a member or speak to those who are. The tangible list of membership benefits in this Market Community gives you and your household access to high quality, organically grown produce from local urban farmers with whom we have built trusting working relationships, one that does not require purchase or minimum orders, lets you mingle with local SME’s who are part of our business’ network, and attend monthly potluck socials where growers, volunteers and customers converge to build a small town farming community right here in St. Petersburg. We could charge much more for membership but we choose to make this a very INCLUSIVE local movement. As usual, we will continue to offer installment payments for those who need them.
