    SPLG BENEFIT: Food Forest Guidance

Part of our Market’s mission is to teach our customers how to grow their own food so they can become more self-sufficient in their “food foraging”. Some even get to the point where they don’t have to purchase anything from our Market! That is a GOOD thing for us. This keeps our business sustainable and manageable by not having to expand our home based business model into something that will feed the entire community. How do we support you in building your own “food forest”? Nathan offers classes twice a month, year-round, to show you how to make your own dirt using no unnatural additives. He teaches his students of all ages and skill levels how to grow YEAR ROUND and to fight pests naturally. To support your homemade dirt, our Market offers several types of chemical-free soil amendments. You can find them all listed at the bottom of the product list under the “Z’s”. We prefer NOT to mix them in with the food listing. If that’s not enough, then we have just launched a Direct Service program to bring larger potted plants to enhance your food forest design, including exotic fruit trees. This program is getting very popular! The icing on the cake is attending our monthly potluck socials to compare notes with other customers who grow their own food. Lots of sharing going on! So when will you start your journey into building a food forest on your property?

    Volunteer Opportunities

We SO appreciate the recent responses we’ve had to our call for Volunteers. We are still in need and ask you to consider the opportunities below. There is something for everyone with a minimal investment of 90 minutes to 2 hours every other week. RIGHT NOW, the Market continues to need the most help, particularly some technical expertise with an understanding of spreadsheets. After sufficient training, this piece could be done (possibly) from your home.

St. Pete Locally Grown Market in St. Pete is the hub for selling fine products of many of the Growers below needing volunteers—and all those listed on Our Growers page.

    JUST RETURNED FROM SEDONA
I am SO refreshed from a recent 5-day journey to the red rocks of Sedona and the wonders of the Grand Canyon. Even Market Managers need renewals. I can now say that I’ve been to the edge!

    SATISFACTION GUARANTEED
Our Market has high standards for what it sells. Despite that—as seasons transition—the challenges of evolving weather and pesky insects can take its toll on the crops. Market Growers are being very selective about what they are willing to present to you. No, it won’t always be picture perfect (which is part of its charm) and sometimes an insect is going to evade capture! But we won’t send you anything that we wouldn’t eat ourselves. If for any reason we have goofed and you are dissatisfied, please report it to me right away so we can rectify the situation. That’s how we get better and we all benefit from that. Your satisfaction is key to our success as a resource for St. Petersburgs’ lovers of chemical-free, organically & locally grown vegetables.

    SPLG’s fruit basket
Medjool dates, luscious local papayas, beautiful nectarines, and primo lemons from CA. Peaches will also be available for our Market very soon! Apples and pears are all imported right now so I did not order any this time.

    More NEWS from the Farms

    • Tara Kipp of Faithful Farms reports that they won’t have lettuce for a few more weeks due to startup and the heat. Their curly kale is also hurting but luckily our other Growers can fill your orders for kale. Faithful Farms will be with us ALL SUMMER! They are just one of several of our Growers who grow all year round. WE ARE SO GRATEFUL for that!
    • Ray Wunderlich of Pioneer Settlement Garden has closed the garden for the summer and anticipates even more availability in the fall. We could not be more grateful for Ray’s astute commitment to furthering the cause of urban farming in St. Petersburg. His behind-the-scenes activities are too many to list. Suffice it to say that he is responsible for lots of gardens getting started in St. Petersburg AND he sends many of them to our Market to sell their overage to our grateful customers. This is key to our sustainability as a locally supported small business.

    WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST CUSTOMERS
Once you have submitted your order, if in doubt about what you owe, you can always confirm what you have been charged for by checking your account history and viewing your most current invoice. Instructions on how to do that are on our Q&A page under the question entitled Since you don’t provide an invoice with delivery, how do I know what I owe? Also, since your vegetables are picked fresh within 24 hours of delivery, they should be lasting for WEEKS in your refrigerator. When you accept delivery, please take a few minutes to inspect your order to protect your vegetables from unnecessary spoilage. Lastly, it is imperative that you understand our policy on Unclaimed Orders found on our Q&A page. When you make a purchase you are agreeing to abide by this policy.

SPLG BENEFIT: We know the Growers!

One of the important jobs of your Market Manager is to build supplier relationships on your behalf. These ties with valuable local resources have been nurtured over years of give and take and getting to know each others’ work ethic. This makes it easier for our Customers to commit to supporting these important local resources. We are fortunate that our vendors—we call them Growers—have similar mindsets and have made a commitment to produce high quality, chemical-free produce and products for the local community. Building our Grower base was a big challenge when we first launched back in 2010. The trend towards chemical-free has exploded since then and now we have vendors pursuing us! Many of our Growers are small entrepreneurial enterprises like our own. We provide them with great online exposure in many ways and, in turn, they help our Market remain well rounded with high quality variety. We want you to know that several of the larger Growers who support us don’t really need our business. However, they understand the importance of small local businesses and take social responsibility by making an investment in our future. THANK YOU to all Growers—large and small—who provide healthy products for our grateful Customers!

    SPECIAL THANKS TO…

Volunteer Rita Sewell for representing our Market at Eckerd College this past weekend for the “Food Security Conference: Focus on Production & Sustainability”
Volunteers—and New England snow birds—John & JanJee Bean and sisters Anita & Rita Roux soon departing for their summer homes. These generous folks are important to our SPLG Volunteer Team and we look forward to their return for next season. We are really going to miss them!

    Volunteer Opportunities

To sustain this Market for the long term, we will need more Customers to get involved as Volunteers. If you have a vested interest in keeping this Market going, please volunteer some time to make that happen. We have organized our volunteer needs by Grower and by Market. RIGHT NOW, the Market needs the most help.

    ON SALE this week
Several lamb cuts (loin and shoulder chops), white and red infused balsamic vinegars, grass-fed butter, white garlic, shallots, and specially formulated laundry soap for athletes (ALL SPORT).

    SPLG’s fruit basket
Medjool dates, luscious local papayas, and Washington State fancy fuji apples. We partner with another local small business to meet the minimum purchase requirement from our large distributor of Certified Organic non-local fruits and veggies. Regrets that we are light on fruit this week as our partner was not able to participate. Fortunately, this is a rare occurrence. We will plan an abundance for next Market in two weeks.

    WELCOME New Grower Coeurisma
Jenifer Slocum joins us this week with her own line of coconut oil using all Certified Organic ingredients. I was struck by her passion to have an impact on our local community. Read all about Coeurisma and then try out her products. Jenifer will be the speaker at our next potluck social on May 23rd where you can sample them and she will explain the health benefits of this saturated fat. One of her products is flavored with dark chocolate… Processed in a commercial kitchen in Largo, Jennifer makes small batches, to order, by hand. In the future, as demand for volume grows, High Pressure Pascalization (HPP) will be implemented for the product. Visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pascalization for a definition. Coeurisma’s website is a work in progress and may reflect HPP in some browsers as the original launch intended to implement this process. Jenifer wants to be transparent and state that they are NOT currently using HPP in their operation but they intend to as soon as feasible. If you want to get to know Jenifer, you can meet her and sample her products at the Local Artisan’s Market located inside William’s Sonoma at the International Mall in Tampa on Saturday, May 2nd from 11am – 4pm.

    WELCOME BACK Strawberry Passion Farms
With strawberry season over, Jerry & Charlie of Strawberry Passion Farms are still working hard in Plant City to grow other Certified Organic veggies. This week they’ve got cucumbers, strawberry onions, round yellow squash, and string beans. Let’s hear it for the basics! They will have produce available until June. Rumor has it they MIGHT try to grow all summer. Keep your fingers crossed! Do read about the Strawberry Onions grown in Central Florida. “…this onion is planted on the edge of the fields to keep bugs and pests away from the precious strawberry crops.” They are supposed to be impacted by the sweetness in the strawberries and we have some this week!

    NEWS from Faithful Farms
Tara reports that “We don’t have any lettuce as the last cold snap damaged the leaves with freeze spots and we can’t sell them.  So it will be several weeks before we have them again. We do have spinach, etc. and new for this week Shishito peppers. Shishito peppers are generally mild but 1 in approx every ten will light you up. Chefs are going crazy for them right now. They add them to dishes but not as the main ingredient.”

Have you tried our new DIRECT ORDER SERVICE?

    WE ARE OPEN YEAR ROUND

Have you been thinking about getting involved with the local food movement, beyond financial support of our Market? Our Market serves St. Petersburg all year long—all summer long—every other week. There is no break in service because our Growers grow year round, unlike large local farms. We have reached a point where additional volunteers are needed to help on Wednesdays through Fridays during weeks that the Market is open. This time spent together is a win-win for everyone involved. Please consider volunteering several hours (2 to 3) every other week to serve the St. Petersburg Community as you help package goods, deliver produce, or assist with administrative tasks. Your time will help keep this small, woman-owned business sustainable! We train our volunteers to be successful working together as a team and we realize there are some who prefer to work alone. We accommodate as best we can. Wonderful friendships are forming! Our volunteers are having the time of their lives working with others who have similar interests. We are now training volunteers for Thursday and Friday morning teams. Please contact Tina at 727-515-9469 to reserve a spot for you or call just to chat if you have questions. You are needed. Please answer the call!

    Organically Inclined is back!
Donna has posted many customer favorites like dried banana chips, dried mangos, red quinoa, chia seeds, raw whole cashews and lots more.

    New to our Market

    • We are excited to be selling bananas for the first time ever and we’ve got over 30 pounds to sell out. This is an experiment of sorts for us. We get them on Monday so we will be storing them carefully until Friday’s deliveries. If you want to freeze bananas for smoothies, we’ve got just the ticket. I always peel mine first.
    • Stevia is a well kept secret for satisfying a sweet tooth AND it’s healthy! Locally grown by Customer Kathleen, our resident food fermentation expert and long distance runner. Stevia is a natural sweetener with a zero glycemic index and no calories
    • Would you believe we have herb-filled window boxes available? Debra Black of Mrs. Chippy’s Plant World is really moving forward to expand our Market’s new DIRECT ORDER SERVICE which makes it possible for you to order larger plants in bigger pots. Debra’s variety has exploded this week!

    On sale this week
All coffee, salmon (rock bottom to get it gone!), extra virgin olive oil, Wisconsin jack cheese, d’anjou pears, shallots, and jumbo white onions.

    When you buy too much
My mom always said “Your eyes were bigger than your belly!” whenever I left food on my plate. Along those lines, I do tend to overbuy produce with the best of intentions but I don’t eat as much as I used to. I look for ways to save week-old produce (that is still fresher than the local store) AND still keep up with an active lifestyle. Last week I finally selected THE RHUBARB COBBLER recipe I intended to brag about making. Luckily the rhubarb still looked and felt just as fresh as when it arrived. SAVED?? Well… I haven’t actually made the cobbler yet but I DID make the filling and refrigerated it in mason jars to finish later in the week. Who knows? Maybe it will ferment a bit and add some pizzazz to the final result. The most pleasant surprise was discovering an easy way to prepare fruit fillings quickly and save for any occasion, like an ice cream topping! Hmmm.

    What customers say about SPLG

    • We very much appreciate your service!!
    • I am just so happy that St Pete Locally Grown is in existence . Having moved here from Up State NY I had pretty much given up on quality produce but then I discovered You!  The taste and freshness is reminiscent of picking straight from the garden pre GMO days! Thank you for the great customer service!
    • I am completely satisfied with the customer service. You guys are on top of it.
    • Everything was great and we look forward to signing on long term! Much easier than driving down to the market every Saturday!
    • Everything was wonderful and I am very pleased. I haven’t had fresh raw cows’ milk since I was a very little girl and I didn’t even know what a papaya looked like before it was cut up and served on my plate! Thank you so much for doing what you do and also thank you for helping me work out the details of the pickup.
    • Everything was wonderful. Delicious, fresh, could not ask for better. Thank you.
    • We’re both very happy with your products and your service, no complaints at all. And I’m already thinking about what to order this week… We’re with you for the long haul, I promise!

St.Pete Locally Grown’s DIRECT ORDER SERVICE Begins THIS WEEK
We are going to try something that will make it possible for you to order larger plants in bigger pots. We have not been able to manage these within our current deliveries on Fridays. Debra Black of Mrs. Chippy’s Plant World is the first Grower to experiment with what we are calling “Direct Order Service”. If it catches on… who knows?

Here’s how it all works: Whenever you order an item that is labelled as a “DIRECT ORDER”, the Grower (initially, Debra) will take responsibility for delivering that item to you at a convenient pre-arranged time, separate from your normal SPLG Friday delivery. The price of the plant includes the Grower’s delivery fee AND you will pay for the plant(s) just as you always have, included with your regular order from us. The only difference is that you will receive an email from the Grower after Market close on Wednesday to schedule convenient delivery of your plant(s). Questions? Please call your Market Manager at 727-515-9469. We are grateful to Debra for having such a passion for selling the larger, more developed plants which will assist our customers in building beautiful edible food forests. THIS WEEK JUST ONE PLANT IS BEING OFFERED SO WE CANTEST DRIVETHIS NEW SERVICE.

    LIKE OUR MARKET?
Here is your chance to tell fellow locavores that you recommend us as their locally grown veggie supplier! Please post a review for us on Local Harvest. That’s how many people find us. You can help welcome them to our Market. Just go to this link and click on “Post a Review”.

WELCOME New Grower Lucky Ladybug Gardens
Claudie Babineaux is the former farm manager for Geraldson Community Farms and struck out on her own this season partnering with Bree Cheatham, Market Manager of www.dunedin.locallygrown. Claudie grows in several locations within Pinellas County, including St. Petersburg, and now has ample vegetables to sell through our Market. Welcome Lucky Ladybug Gardens!!

    WELCOME BACK Urban • Olio
For one season in 2011, Stephanie & Peyton were generous suppliers of avocadoes and Hamlin oranges for our fledgling Market. Then life had them moving away to new adventures. But lucky us, they are back living in St. Petersburg and now offering their homegrown loquats on our Market. Welcome back Urban Olio!

    OH THOSE SALADS!
Our Salad Signature Series is relaunching this week from Nathan’s Natural Veggies. You know the ones… “salad mixes with substance” containing various bits of cranberry hibiscus, purslane, and Ceylon spinach. You’ll know them when you see them. Just search for “salad” on our Market. Each mix comes with a salad dressing recipe especially suited for the mix you purchase. These salads sell like hotcakes all summer long should local lettuce become scarce.

    DIRECT ORDER Begins March 30th

We are going to try something that will make it possible for you to order larger plants in bigger pots. We have not been able to manage these within our current deliveries on Fridays. Debra Black of Mrs. Chippy’s Plant World is the first Grower to experiment with what we are calling “Direct Order”. If it catches on… who knows? Here’s how it all works! Whenever you order an item that is labelled as a “DIRECT ORDER”, the Grower (initially, Debra) will take responsibility for delivering that item to you at a convenient pre-arranged time, separate from your normal SPLG Friday delivery.

    GROWER PRODUCT NEWS

    • From SPLG Market Organics, a $1 per pound offer of small organic red potatoes that came in for last Market. They have just barely begun to hint at some “eye” activity. Not much—mind you, but enough to want them out the door, cooked into wonderful potato salads, and chilled in your refrigerator for savory enjoyment!
    • This week we welcome St. Petersburg based Coquina Key Bee Sanctuary to our Market. Their “Save the Bees” combo pack with two beeswax lotion bars, bee-friendly flower seeds, and a complimentary honey sample debuts today! Just search the market for “Save the Bees”. BE SURE to visit their Grower page link to find out more about getting your own bees or simply providing space for them to produce honey on your property.
    • Faithful Farm has more romaine lettuce than they know what to do with this week! Take advantage of a 3-fer offer of 3 heads for just $6.45. No “fuzzy math” here! Check out their flat leaf spinach 2-pounders too.
    • Sunset Ranch formerly sold delicious ground lamb on our Market. This week Jim Kuntzelman is offering us new products from fresh ground pork. Our Market is introducing Mild Italian and Hot Italian sausages along with Coarse Ground Bratwurst made locally in Sarasota using Jim’s pastured pigs. Read all about Jim’s new venture on Sunset Ranch’s Grower page.
    • Nathan’s Natural Veggies is offering new vegetable seedlings for your spring planting, including callaloo and Seminole pumpkin squash. Just search the market for “Seedlings”.
    • Pioneer Settlement Garden offers celery stalks on our Market that will convince you that you’ve NEVER tasted real celery before. Try it before the season is gone. Even the color of the stalks are different than you’re used to. It is rare to find this grown locally. Ray has Strawberry seedlings too!

    THIS WEEK’S FRUIT
Medjool dates, papayas, cripps apples with a flourescent pink skin, and kiwis. Due to low fruit sales last Market, we cut back this week.

    Will YOU answer "The Call"?

A CALL TO ACTION FROM ST. PETE LOCALLY GROWN

    Greetings Valued Customers:
Have you been thinking about getting involved with the local food movement, beyond financial support of our Market?

If so, please consider volunteering several hours (2 to 3) every other week to serve the St. Petersburg Community as you help package goods, deliver produce, or assist with administrative tasks. We train our volunteers to be successful working together as a team and we realize there are some who prefer to work alone. We accommodate as best we can. Wonderful friendships are forming! And, YES, we do have fun…

Many of our loyal volunteers literally have been with St. Pete Locally Grown for YEARS. There are reasons for that. Our volunteers are treated fairly, highly appreciated, well trained, and having the time of their lives working with others who have similar interests. They want to give their time to a local food movement that is well organized and guarantees success of every member of the team. No one leaves without feeling like a winner!

Through life circumstances, several on our current team are making changes in their lifestyles, traveling more, and exploring or expanding new avenues based (at least a little bit) on what they’ve experienced volunteering for St. Pete Locally Grown. As a result, we have reached a point where new volunteers are needed to help on Wednesdays through Fridays during weeks that the Market is open. This time spent together is a win-win for everyone involved.

One of our new customers, Suzanne, is volunteering with our Market to become familiar with everything we sell and to learn what to do with the veggies she has never bought before. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED in learning more about the food you buy from us, want to be an integral part of a successful team, or you want to learn how to do what we do- please contact me at 727-515-9469 or email me with a good time to call you & chat. We will make room for you to come and help. If you would like to speak with any of our volunteers to get feedback on what it’s like, they are willing to share their enthusiasm! Just let me know and I will connect you.

We begin training new volunteers for our Thursday and Friday morning teams on March 19th & 20th. Please contact me to reserve a spot for you on either day. Or call just to chat if you have questions.

You are needed. Please answer the call!
    All the best,
    Tina

    Save Money. Buy Bulk.

Our Market’s definition of “bulk” may be different than you are used to. We don’t have cases of vegetables to sell but we do have packages of items weighing from 1 to 3 pounds that are priced to sell due to oversupply. They are still FRESHLY HARVESTED but there is so much to sell that Growers would rather discount them than toss them into the compost. From arugula to green beans to oregano, our ECONOMY category (as we call it) just might hold the nuggets that you don’t have access to in these larger quantities. Dry some pungent Greek oregano and share as gifts with your co-workers. Freeze stringbeans for up to nine months! Swiss chard works wonders in soups and stews which freeze very nicely. Try Curried Red Lentil and Swiss Chard Stew with Garbanzo Beans. To view all ECONOMY items—from “The Market” page—simply click on “ECONOMY” under categories listed on the left side of your screen. To switch back, select “All Products” instead. This is called “filtering”. If you need help, call your Market Manager at 727-515-9469. Stock up and save money!

    RETURN OF ORGANICALLY INCLINED
Welcome back, Donna! She is back and offering red quinoa for the first time on our Market!

    COMING SOON
This week we had hoped to introduce a variety of pork sausages and bacon produced by a USDA inspected facility in Sarasota. Grower Jim Kuntzelman of Sunset Ranch in Dover has been delayed due to family matters that take precedent. We plan to provide these wonderful new products on our Market very soon.

Had planned for Florida cucumbers and California artichokes this Market but neither were delivered in condition as expected. We are fussy for quality! We did, however, get those wonderful looking Covington yams from NC and they are in perfect condition. The romanesco cauliflower also looks amazing as does the Florida yellow squash!

    MISSING GERALDSON COMMUNITY FARM
For the past several Markets we haven’t been able to order from GCF because their CSA members are their priority. As a result, the remaining variety has been quite small. This is all due to wet weather and the consequences of that on their location in Bradenton. They have such a gorgeous stretch of land but it floods. Operations Manager Christa Leonard is a true pro and is doing a great job of managing this challenge. If you ever have a chance to drive down and visit, you will not want to come back to the city!

    THIS WEEK’S FRUIT
Strawberries, sour oranges (aka calamondins), honeybell oranges, tangerines, papayas (both green & ripe), braeburn apples, Medjool dates, star fruit, dried cranberries, dried mangos, and red d’anjou pears.

    HEADS UP!
We’ve got carrots, at last, from both Pioneer Settlement Garden in St. Pete and Geraldson Community Farm in Bradenton.

LAMB HAS ARRIVED FROM ALEXANDRA LAKE FARM
Nathan and I tried the lamb chops out last night and they were wonderful! I lightly marinaded them for an hour in lemon juice, raw chopped shallots, and rice wine vinegar, started them on the stove top in coconut oil and finished baking them in the oven for 18 minutes at 350 with some of the marinade poured over them and a little red wine around the edges. Oven baking is a technique I recently read about to guarantee moist pork chops so I figured… why not? They were scrumptious and moist, with a gentle yet rich flavor. These animals are Animal Welfare Approved and are NOT mass produced so the meat is limited and available only until it sells out. If customer demand is there, we will purchase again next year. New Market “Grower” Leon Elt needs volunteers and wants to teach others how to raise lambs. It’s a 50-minute ride to his place in Dade City from St. Pete. Check out Alexandra Lake Farm for his contact info.

    BIG SMALL FARM
If you or anyone you know is living in or moving to Central Florida, here is an important organization to become involved with. Leon Elt of Alexandra Lake Farm is involved with a nonprofit named Big Small Farm. Eric & Anna Scott are also involved with this group so you know it’s a good one!

    THIS WEEK’S FRUIT
