USDA Certified Organic

At Geraldson Community Farm, we strive to go above and beyond answering the call for safe, local, organic produce. We do this by teaming up with nature, encouraging biodiversity and growing healthy soils.

We believe the basis for healthy plants are healthy soils, and we invest in our soils. We carefully monitor and balance soil nutrients using only certified organic products and practices. Crop rotation, conservation tillage, cover crops and compost make up the other major components of our successful soil building program.

With healthy soils, plants can flourish and defend themselves against pests naturally – by producing a cocktail of chemicals which attract predatory insects, inhibit feeding by herbivores and alert nearby plants of potential pest threats. To further help our vegetables we choose plant varieties for our climate and develop habitats for natural pest predators. Additionally, the eight bee boxes on the farm provide a home for hundreds of thousands of pollinators. If pests excessively threaten our crops, we use the gentlest methods possible to tip the scales in favor of the vegetables, and never sacrifice environmental sustainability or food safety for economic gain. We believe blemishes are better than potentially dangerous chemicals and firmly stand behind our integrated pest management practices.

Weeds are not all bad, and where they don’t adversely affect crop health, we don’t seek to eradicate unintended plants, opting instead to let weeds attract beneficial insects and grow organic matter for our soils.

From the earliest planning phases, water conservation has been the highest priority at Geraldson Community Farm, and our irrigation system is designed to make the most efficient use of all of our water resources.

Every decision at Geraldson Community farm is made with an increasing awareness of how we fit within the broader community and the natural environment. We are dedicated to producing safe and healthy produce with the most sustainable methods available, including soil and water conservation as well as integrated pest management practices. We are always looking to improve!
