The Dooryard Supermarket

Website: stpetegarden.com/

My name is Derek and I’m a gardener here in St Petersburg. I work full time to produce food for my family from my half acre yard. I grow all my veggies, herbs, and flowers from seed and work hard to find varieties that do well in our environment. I do not use any chemical pesticides or fertilizers, using instead organic fertilizers and manure. I have been using compost from Mothers Organics and Luvkins.

We grow our food to avoid the huge cost to the environment, migrant & native workers, etc that comes from shopping at large grocery stores. There is something special about eating something right after it is harvested and I would like to share this with others.

The Dooryard Supermarket is teaming up with a neighbor who raises chickens for eggs. This co-op between farmer and egg producer is one more way that local produce and local jobs are being created. Our eggs come from happy chickens, eating a mixture of purchased grains, kitchen scraps, and veggies from the garden. You can’t find anything closer, fresher or more nutritive than these St Pete raised eggs. As per Florida law these cottage industry eggs are labeled for “pet consumption only,” but even by the standards of “cage free” eggs these are better in every way – quality and treatment of the animals, quality of the food, quality of the product, and incredibly low carbon footprint.
