Scott & Vanessa Coldwell have a great story behind their reasons for raising pastured chickens on their 5-acre homestead in Plant City. On their website you can read about a serious illness in their close knit family that was a catalyst for them to change their lifestyle and eating habits. Hence, the formation of The Maker’s Farm.

Their Cornish Cross Chickens are a hybrid between Cornish Hens and White Rock Roosters and are referred to as pastured broiler chickens. They are moved to fresh pasture daily using the open aired pen on wheels pictured above. In addition to bugs and critters in the pasture’s soil, they eat a chemical-free feed ration of corn, oats, soy (just 10%), alfalfa, and fish meal which is high in protein. They also eat naturally organic feed containing minerals and probiotics. Chickens from The Maker’s Farm are chemical-free, hormone-free, steroid-free, and anti-biotic free. Nathan and I can attest that they taste delicious!

Because these birds are raised to order, our Market has made a commitment to submit monthly monetary deposits for a select number of them on behalf of our valued customers. This will insure that our Market members have access to the freshest birds around. These chickens are processed on the farm using humane kosher practices and are sold to our Market members per guidelines of P.L. 90-492 Producers/Growers USDA Exemption. FYI, Public Law 90-492 is the 1957 Wholesome Poultry Products Act. It’s the federal law that requires poultry to be slaughtered in a USDA-approved facility if you’re going to sell them to anyone else. There’s an exemption to 90-492 that says you can do on-farm processing and sales (and not need USDA inspection) if you do less than a certain number per year. We have visited the farm and are satisfied that the chickens are processed in a clean, natural and sanitary environment using humane methods. Customers are welcomed at the farm to inspect the processing area. We believe in the adage: “Know your farmer!” Per Florida Dept. of Agriculture these birds are labeled NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION.

We will deliver the birds frozen and they will have been slaughtered, as a courtesy service by The Maker’s Farm, within the previous 24 hours of their delivery to our Market. When you get your bird, we advise you to store it deep in your freezer where there is little-to-no air current. If you store the bird in the door of your freezer it can get freezer burned and this can impact its post-thawed quality. Frozen raw chickens should be used within 12 months, according to the United States Department of Agriculture. SOURCE: www.livestrong.com
